The Mustang Diaries: Sunny is Almost Halter Trained

Updated: Jul 15

Sunny has been a star student over the last week, making IMMENSE progress in her training journey. She is almost entirely halter-broke, a significant milestone in her journey towards becoming a rideable companion.

We start by free lunging in the training arena to get her blood flowing and mind engaged in the lesson. The way she squares up to me when asked is a tangible expression of her willingness to learn and cooperate. The responsiveness of her hindquarters, yielding to the slightest suggestion at liberty, demonstrates an understanding that transcends mere obedience. These aren't simply tricks; they are evidence of a growing partnership, a testament to the power of connection.

The act of haltering has become almost routine, especially in an open area. This simple act represents a significant leap in trust. She typically no longer flees at the sight of a person entering her space, but instead stands steadily and sometimes even approaches with cautious curiosity. The ability to touch most of her body, a privilege earned through countless hours of desensitization, speaks volumes about her increasing comfort and acceptance of my presence.

Perhaps the most impressive feat of all is her ability to be lead. With only a few haltered lessons under her belt, she is already comprehending the concept of following a person when asked.
