We are trying out a new cadence for the client horses with us and doing weekly updates.
Phoenix had another productive week in training, continuing to build confidence, trust, and foundational skills. As a 4-year-old former wild mustang, he is progressing steadily and showing a willingness to learn as we introduce new challenges and reinforce important groundwork exercises.
This week we focused on several key areas:
Standing Tied
Phoenix spent time working on standing quietly while tied. This is an important life skill that helps him learn patience, relaxation, and good manners during grooming, tacking up, and everyday handling. He showed significant improvement over time, becoming more comfortable standing calmly and waiting without feeling the need to move around.
Fly Spray Desensitization
We also worked on accepting fly spray. Many horses find the sound, sensation, or movement of the spray bottle unsettling at first, and after a few sessions Phoenix handled the process well. Through gradual exposure and positive experiences, he became increasingly relaxed and accepting of being sprayed on different parts of his body. He is still wary when he initially sees the bottle but slowly growing out of that fear.
Lateral Flexion
Lateral flexion exercises continued to be part of his routine. These exercises encourage softness, responsiveness, and body awareness while strengthening communication between horse and handler. It is also the foundation for a mounted single rein stop, the only true "e-brake" we have when riding. Phoenix is beginning to understand the cues more consistently and is becoming softer through his neck and body.
Step-Ups and Obstacle Confidence
Phoenix practiced stepping up onto raised platforms. This type of work helps improve balance, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving skills. He approached the exercises thoughtfully and became more willing to step up when prompted. Once he was able to do this with ease we then knew he was ready for trailer loading.
Trailer Loading
One of the biggest accomplishments this week was trailer-loading practice. Phoenix made good progress learning to confidently approach, enter, and spend time in the trailer. Building positive experiences around the trailer is essential for future adventures, and he is becoming increasingly comfortable with the process. By the end of our first trailer loading session he was self loading and remaining calm in the trailer.
Looking Ahead
Our goal for next weekend is to have Phoenix ready to trailer out to an obstacle course. This will provide an exciting opportunity for him to apply the skills he has been developing in a new environment while continuing to build confidence and trust. If his progress continues at the current pace, he should be well-prepared for this next step in his training journey.
Phoenix continues to impress with his thoughtful attitude and steady progress. We're excited to see what he accomplishes in the coming weeks.
