The Mustang Diaries: Phoenix June 22-29 Training update

Phoenix had another productive week, with several exciting milestones that continue to build a strong foundation for his future.

One of this week's biggest accomplishments was his first full front hoof trim using all of the farrier tools and the hoof jack. For a young BLM mustang, this is a huge step. Phoenix remained thoughtful and willing throughout the process, showing just how much his confidence and trust have grown. Every positive experience like this makes future hoof care easier and safer for both of us.

We're also making great progress with his hind feet. Right now, we're working at liberty on picking up and cleaning out his back hooves. Rather than relying on restraint, I'm focusing on teaching Phoenix to willingly participate and understand what's being asked of him. Watching him offer his feet more consistently each session has been incredibly rewarding.

This week also brought another exciting first—Phoenix went out into pasture for the first time! We're starting small, giving him time to adjust and build confidence in a new environment. As part of that transition, he's also been introduced to electric fencing. Learning to respect electric fence is an important life skill for many horses, and Phoenix has handled the experience thoughtfully as he continues to explore his surroundings.

Another exciting first this week was Phoenix's very first trailer ride! Introducing trailer loading and hauling is an important part of preparing any horse for the future, and Phoenix handled the experience with curiosity and a calm attitude. While there's still plenty of room to build confidence through repetition, this first ride was a fantastic beginning.

Outside of these milestones, we're continuing to refine all of the groundwork skills we've been building over the past several weeks. Each session focuses on improving communication, responsiveness, and confidence so that Phoenix has a solid foundation before taking the next step in his journey.

With Phoenix scheduled to head home next month, every training session is focused on preparing him for a smooth transition. From hoof handling and trailer loading to everyday groundwork, the goal is to send him home with the skills and confidence he'll need to continue succeeding with his new family.

I'm incredibly proud of how much Phoenix has accomplished in such a short time. It's been amazing to watch him grow from a cautious mustang into a willing, curious partner who continues to surprise me every week. I can't wait to see what these final weeks of training bring!
