The Mustang Diaries: Axl & Oakley - First Halter!

Axl, and one of our new residents in for training, Oakley, are making leaps and bounds in their journey by accepting first halters! Both of these handsome boys are doing awesome and are on their way to becoming productive members of society!

Axl and Oakley, both 11 years old and previously stallions until last year, arrived nervous and wary. Their eyes, wide and watchful, held a story of open ranges and a life untouched by human hands. Our initial approach was simple: respect. We gave them space to acclimate to their new surroundings, a private corral with plenty of forage and shelter. Days were spent simply observing, letting them observe us in return, building a foundation of familiarity.

Eventually, the learned to free lunge and how to give me their eyes instead of heels at all times. This lead to a closer and closer approach, introducing a rope, and eventually lots of touching. Followed by touching with the halter and ultimately their first haltering! I am beyond pleased with these two distinguished gentlemen and can't wait to walk the rest of their journey with them!
