The past week has been extremely hot and busy, leaving us with barely any time to accomplish things. Joe came with me on a livestock haul out to Wyoming and back, and the Northeast turned into Death Valley! But this week started strong with Atlas hitting the ground running literally and figuratively. He is doing awesome, and we are about ready to put the saddle on for the first time.
I like to start these colts with just a surcingle, then step up to a surcingle + saddle pad, and then eventually a saddle. We will then review every ground exercise they know and identify any holes or other issues in their foundation. Ultimately, no new exercises are introduced; instead, minor additions of tack are made in steps. I find that this helps them adapt to the feeling of girth pressure and presence on their back without being overwhelmed with new tasks and exercises.
